Aharona Israel is a an interdisciplinary artist whose varied training -she is trained in dances and holds a B.A. in architecture -informs a body of work that combines intimate research into body and movement with a strong sensibility to social and political themes. Her work has been seen in festivals and theaters in Israel and across Europe since 2002.

MARATHON has been a hit at festivals around the world since its debut in 2012 and comes to Peterborough between the new Progress Festival in Toronto and the Undercurrents Festival in Ottawa. Marathon uses endless running as a metaphor for the daily experience of young Israelis, in a highly physical theater work that pushes its three performers to the limit.  Which of them will survive? As time goes by, their journey becomes more difficult and gradually the wounds of Israeli society open up and its default options become apparent. Through the performers’ own stories the work reflects on some subconscious elements in Israeli culture and mentality, such as constant sense of emergency and a desperate holding onto ideas and ideals.
