Founded in 1983, PARD Therapeutic Riding is a not-for-profit incorporated charity that is operated solely by volunteers. Dedicated volunteers provide riding instruction, skill development, and social interaction to riders of all ages with a range of physical and intellectual disabilities. PARD operates from May to October; weekly lessons are offered to 10 groups of 3-4 riders. Riders experience the challenge, enjoyment, and benefits of therapeutic and recreational horseback riding in a rural setting. Lessons are a half-hour in length and are run by certified instructors. Each rider is assisted by as many as 3 volunteers; one volunteer leads the horse, and one or two volunteers walk alongside the rider to provide physical and emotional support, depending on the rider’s needs.
